About MERA — The Echo of Scent
My grandmother's house smelled like nowhere else on earth.
Barley tea on the stove. Hinoki from the bath. Persimmons drying by the window. I grew up surrounded by scents that had no name in English — quiet, layered, intentional — and for years I assumed everyone's home felt that way. Then I moved abroad and discovered that most homes don't have a smell at all.
I started MERA so that smell could live somewhere besides my memory.
What MERA Is
MERA is a Korean-curated scent house bringing East Asian aromatherapy rituals to the modern American home. We don't manufacture our own products yet — we are, for now, curators. We source from US-based artisans and small fragrance houses whose work most closely captures the scent traditions we grew up with, then we name each scent for the moment it was made for: Persimmon Hour, Hanok Wood, Last Light at the Pavilion.
We are not a generic perfume reseller. We are not an aromatherapy clinic. We are a small team — one Korean curator and her AI co-founder — building the home fragrance brand we wished existed when we left Korea.
The Four Beliefs
Everything we do is shaped by four ideas. They are the same four ideas we wrote about in our free e-book, The Korean Art of Scent:
- Scent follows weather. Light, watery florals in spring. Warm woods in autumn. Deep resins in winter. Once you start noticing it, you can't un-notice it.
- Scent attaches to behavior. A specific oil for studying. A specific incense for evening reading. The scent is the frame around the act.
- Scent prefers a single voice. One thing burns. The rest of the room is allowed to be quiet. Eastern interiors rarely layer many scents at once.
- Scent should be unhurried. The most prized incense in Korean tradition takes thirty minutes to fully open. We have lost some of that patience. This shop is, in part, an exercise in getting it back.
How We're Different
Most US-market scent brands fall into three buckets: luxury department store perfume, mass-market home fragrance (Yankee Candle, Bath & Body Works), or sterile clinical aromatherapy. MERA sits in a category that barely exists in the US — thoughtful, narrative-driven, culturally specific home scent.
Our differentiation is not just "Korean-inspired." It is the unhurried, ritual-first sensibility that defines East Asian scent culture — and the simple fact that the curator is Korean, was raised at the source of these traditions, and brings them to you with context.
Curated in Korea. Lived in everywhere.
This is our quiet promise. Every scent in our catalog is selected for one reason: it reminds us of something specific and irreplaceable. We hope it reminds you of something too, even if it is something you have not yet lived.
Thank you for reading this far. If you're new here, the easiest place to start is our free PDF guide The Korean Art of Scent — fourteen pages, six foundational scents, four daily rituals, and a $50 starter library plan. It is the gentlest possible introduction to everything we do.
